August 7, 2020Wildlife Control in the Fall
October 22, 2020Finding any critters in your home that aren’t supposed to be there is likely to cause some fear and alarm – but bats are among the scariest. Although a bat is unlikely to actually hurt anyone in your home – and is likely more scared of you are your family than you are of it – you will likely want to get rid of the bat in your house before any issues do arise.
Here is how to deal with bats if they get into your home.
Step One: Determine How Widespread the Bat Problem Is
Before you determine how to handle your bat problem, you need to have an idea of how many bats there are. Is this one bat who got confused and flew in through an open door or window? Or is there a whole bunch of bats hiding in your attic that you need to deal with?
Step Two: Removing a Bat From Your Home
If you do believe there is only one bat, it is best to isolate the room where the bat is as best as you can by closing the doors to the rest of your home. Then, leave your doors and windows open and let the bat search for the exit on its own.
Chasing the bat with objects or nets can cause the bat to panic, which will only make the whole process take longer.
If the bat does land, you can utilize household items to scoop the bat into a container and then release it outside. It is best to wear gloves when you do this, so you don’t actually touch the bat.
Step Three: Removing Several Bats
If you’ve determined that there are actually several bats in your home, you will need to locate the specific place where they are coming in and seal it. Otherwise, as you get them out, they will return.
Then you can attempt to get the bats to exit on their own. However, depending on how many bats there are, it may be better to contact a professional to help out.
Step Four: Cleaning and Checking
Whether you only had one bat or an entire family, you’ll want to make sure you clean up any droppings. Exposure to bat droppings can be harmful. You’ll also want to check any possible entry points where bats may have come into your home to ensure they are sealed well so your home is protected.
